Eyes Shut

What is in my eyes
That makes you question me?
What do you think I'm hiding from you
What thoughts run through your head?
Why don't you tell me your hopes and dreams
Why can't you trust me?
Do my eyes falter when I say I care
I know they don't always meet your own
But I don't like people seeing the pain
That hides just below the surface
Ready to spill over into my line of sight
Cutting holes in my carefree façade
I can't have the world seeing my tarnished soul
So please, when you look in my eyes
Don't dig too deep
Don't gaze too long
Don't find my pain
Or you'll find that I'm not really strong
I don't have the world at my fingertips
Like it seems you think I do
So don't think that I'll ever knowingly hurt you
It's happened too often to me
Just don't look too hard into my eyes
And please don't uncover what you need not see.
