From perfume, towards the color of your shirt, right down to the smelliness of your feet, mosquitoes appear to find any reason to sink themselves into human skin.
Scientists state that stinky feet and socks might be included with a list of things that attract 腳臭 to give off human blood. One African scientist has become using that amount of research to assist fight malaria in Tanzania by creating traps that give off, seeking to lure the bloodsuckers that carry the ailment for their hosts.
“Scientists have known for a long time that mosquitoes smell people; they tend not to see us, instead they smell us,” wrote Dr. Fredros Okumu in an email from Tanzania where he heads the investigation project on the Ifakara Health Institute. “It is the things which we produce in your breath, sweat of skin that [mosquitoes] use as a signal to get us. So if you are wearing socks, these skin-derived chemicals stay on the sock fabric and can nevertheless be detected by mosquitoes even after you have removed your socks.”
Okumu’s project received a $775,000 grant today in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada to fund the traps and help further development.
But unclean feet and dirty socks aren’t really the only items that entice a mosquito to go in for the kill. Experts point out that Limburger cheese has been found to be alluring to certain mosquito populations. Ned Walker, a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University, studies mosquitoes extensively. Walker said that everything from body build to the sort of perfume you wear could possibly be the difference between deterring and attracting the pests.
“There is a variation among attraction to different people … Men are usually attractive because they are typically larger than women,” said Walker, adding the floral scents given off by deodorants and perfumes also attract some varieties of mosquitoes towards the skin.
However, determining why many people leave a picnic covered in bites while some escape with no battle wound continues to be up for debate.
“There are several [species] that happen to be attractive to the odors in humans. But what we wish to know is the reason some mosquitoes are fascinated by birds instead of mammals, to many subsets of humans although not all humans. It becomes an active area of research,” said Walker.
Joe Conlon, technical adviser in the American Mosquito Control Association, said genetics along with fair skin may also be involved in attractive to mosquitoes, although scientists remain dexrpky21 regardless of if the bites are merely more noticeable on individuals with fair skin.
And while fair skin might be more alluring to the insects, lighter colors of clothing turn them off.
“It’s prudent to dress in light-colored clothing. There is a preference by some species to be interested in darker colors… Wear loose fitting clothing. Mosquitoes can bite through tight-fitting clothing,” he was quoted saying.
Conlon mentioned that really the only surefire way of preventing from biting would be to wear a repellant, to observe what clothes you wear and to get rid of standing water that collects in places like with the bases of flower pots and in the bottom of air conditioning drip pans.
Also, he cautioned against using any substitutes to 除臭襪 like vitamin b complex, praoclaiming that double blind tests have proven these remedies to not work effectively.
“Oftentimes, people are not fearful enough. With West Nile Virus falling off the radar, folks are less concerned. … Individuals need to [know] they cannot just ruin your picnic, they are able to ruin your way of life,” said Conlon.
